Langhorne Bond, Former FAA Administrator,
to receive the Glen A. Gilbert Award
The Board of Directors of the Air Traffic
Control Association selected Langhorne Bond,
former Administrator of the Federal Aviation
Administration, to receive the 1999 Glen A.
Gilbert Memorial Award. The Glen A. Gilbert
Memorial Award is dedicated to the
memory of one of the recognized "Fathers
of Air Traffic Control" and honors the lifelong
achievements of an individual in the field
of aviation with special emphasis in the field of
Air Traffic Control. The Award trophy
inscribed with recipients names, is on permanent
display at the Smithsonian National Air
and Space Museum, Washington, DC.
Mr. Bond has spent most of his professional
lifetime working in all aspects of aviation –
safety, air traffic control operations,
airport development, and aircraft manufacturing and
marketing. He has authored a series of
policy papers on the safety and operational
aspects of satellite navigation and surveillance.
These papers have received worldwide
attention, and have caused a re-examination
of the safety, architecture, and cost benefits
of the future air navigation system. The
outcome adopted may include a mixed array of
ground based and satellite signals which
will ensure safety, increase international
acceptance of GNSS, and permit widespread
usage of modern, high accuracy technology.
The Air Traffic Control Association will
present this premier award at the Glen A.
Gilbert Memorial Award Banquet Thursday,
September 30, 1999, during its 44 th Annual
Convention at the Town and Country Resort
Hotel in San Diego, California.
