Langhorne Bond, Former FAA Administrator, to receive the Glen A. Gilbert Award

The Board of Directors of the Air Traffic Control Association selected Langhorne Bond,
former Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, to receive the 1999 Glen A.
Gilbert Memorial Award. The Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award is dedicated to the
memory of one of the recognized "Fathers of Air Traffic Control" and honors the lifelong
achievements of an individual in the field of aviation with special emphasis in the field of
Air Traffic Control. The Award trophy inscribed with recipients names, is on permanent
display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington, DC.

Mr. Bond has spent most of his professional lifetime working in all aspects of aviation –
safety, air traffic control operations, airport development, and aircraft manufacturing and
marketing. He has authored a series of policy papers on the safety and operational
aspects of satellite navigation and surveillance. These papers have received worldwide
attention, and have caused a re-examination of the safety, architecture, and cost benefits
of the future air navigation system. The outcome adopted may include a mixed array of
ground based and satellite signals which will ensure safety, increase international
acceptance of GNSS, and permit widespread usage of modern, high accuracy technology.

The Air Traffic Control Association will present this premier award at the Glen A.
Gilbert Memorial Award Banquet Thursday, September 30, 1999, during its 44 th Annual
Convention at the Town and Country Resort Hotel in San Diego, California.
